The Bright Future of EV

Components and Devices Suitable for EV Charging and EV Charging Station Application Requirements

EV Charging Solutions

As the Electric Vehicle market continues to grow, so will the need for EV Charging Solutions. The demand for EVs supports the contribution to global environmental health concerns by substantially reducing pollution, along with many other benefits. Industry experts forecast significant sales growth in the coming years for the automotive market, making EVs a key part of the next generation of vehicles and means of transport. To accommodate this influx, the network of EV Charging Stations must improve as more EVs take the roads. As a solution for EV Charger and EV Charging Station designs, Panasonic offers a wide range of Electronic Components and Devices that support charge control, communication, and human interface device requirements for EV Charging applications.

Essential EV Relay Functions

Panasonic Mechanical Power Relay and PhotoMOS® Relay Solutions

1. Safety Cutoff on the AC Side (Figure 1.1)

The purpose of this Relay is to be used to protect the grid power network by cutting off the circuit to prevent abnormal currents that occur from affecting the commercial power supply. Panasonic offers a line-up of AC Power Relays such as the LF-G, HE-S, and HE PV Type Series which can be used as safety measures to protect the power supply system.

2. Safety Cutoff on the DC Side (Figure 1.3)

This can be one of the most demanding requirements for a DC Power Relay. These Relays are required as a safety measure in the event of a defect in or malfunction of the battery or system. The Panasonic EP Relay Series features a hermetically sealed construction, with a hydrogen gas mix enclosed within a ceramic capsule to enhance arc reduction at these high voltage and current values.

3. Signal Control for IC Card Activation (Figure 1.4)

For models that require the use of IC cards for charge control, low on-resistance type PhotoMOS® Relays with voltages around 30V to 60V are ideal.

4. Insulation Detection for Battery Inside the Inverter (Figure 1.2/ Figure 2)

If the insulation in a station deteriorates, a ground-fault current passes when the relay is turned on, and a sensor detects the current. High load voltage types PhotoMOS® are ideal for use with quick charger stations which carry high voltage. With their high switching speeds and electrical isolation, these Relays are ideal for scanning battery cells.
